Embracing Analytics As the Key To Excellence

Analytics have been described as “the competitive advantage for the next decade,” yet provider organizations are often far behind other industries in embracing analytics.

The role of the physician leader has dramatically changed over the past decade. In 1999, a chief medical officer (CMO) was described as "a diplomat, first and foremost... serving as a 'minister without a portfolio.’”1

Today, CMOs and other physician leaders are still diplomats, but they also have critical operational responsibilities, including achieving quality outcomes, managing physician productivity, driving organizational growth and leading care delivery innovations.

In virtually all other industries, analytics serve as a foundational capability for managers at all levels. During their medical training, physicians become experts at analyzing and incorporating data and scientific analyses into patient care, but they often first encounter the need to understand and manage operational and organizational data when they become physician leaders.
