Much of the discussion at the SIIM (Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine) 2010 Annual Meeting revolved around incorporating medical images as part of a complete EHR and exchanging this information freely among internal departments and external healthcare systems. This is the ultimate goal of the HITECH Act initiatives instituted by the federal government, but this is proving to be one of the most difficult propositions in the medical imaging field. The following are a few quotes from vendor executives at the SIIM event that outline their best practices for integrating medical images into enterprise EHRs and other legacy systems. Most of these sound bites focus on the use of standards. However a few key questions emerge — which standards should be used, who owns that data, and what do with legacy data generated prior to these standards?
