I'm going to start this column out with some simple questions that will help guide us in this discussion that we're going to have over the next 6 months.

So, to start, what is the biggest security challenge in the healthcare industry today? Is it complexity? Is it privacy? Is it data sharing? Is it a reliance on technology that we know is flawed from the beginning? Or, is it the people that use the technology that creates our problems? Is it the folks that think that they're crafting solutions when they create legislative solutions for technology failures or poor Internet hygiene?

Is the healthcare industry any different from other industries that face the same challenges as far as information security is concerned? Will we be able to contrast and compare other solutions in a way that makes our jobs easier? How about looking at how some of these solutions have been deployed in other environments and learning from their experience?

There are lots of questions but despite what you may think, there really are answers out there. I've seen them. They're not perfect, but they do work. It's just not very easy to get there for more reasons then I can count.
