M*Modal And Intermountain Healthcare Collaborate On Industry's First Speech-Enabled Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) App For iPhone And iPad

M*Modal, a leading provider of clinical documentation and Speech Understanding solutions, recently announced an agreement with Intermountain Healthcare to jointly develop innovative mobile technology for speech-enabled Computerized Physician Order Entry  (CPOE), enabling physicians and hospital staff to conversationally order patient medication and other medical functions using iOS devices, including iPhone and iPad mobile digital devices. This mobile application (app) will benefit healthcare providers by allowing physicians to quickly, easily and securely place orders at the point of care.

M*Modal (booth #6647) and Intermountain (booth #1810) will be demonstrating the order entry app for medications at the 2013 HIMSS Conference, being held March 3-7 in New Orleans. Intermountain is an internationally recognized healthcare provider network of 22 hospitals, 185 clinics and an affiliated health insurance company, SelectHealth.

M*Modal’s CPOE solution uses highly intelligent Speech Understanding and cloud technology to bring simplicity and flexibility to physicians and other healthcare professionals. For medication orders, users will be able to select the patient, describe information on the prescription – including dosage, frequency and qualifiers – and send the request to an electronic health record (EHR) order entry system with a minimum of steps and effort.

“The ability for a physician to dictate common prescription orders and have them seamlessly integrated into our electronic medical record system can create better productivity and improve patient safety,” said Marc Probst, CIO and VP of Information Systems at Intermountain Healthcare.

M*Modal’s CPOE will support common, frequently prescribed medications based on a health care system’s formulary. In addition, the app will be designed to enable other order functions, including imaging (CT scans), nursing (catheters, checking vitals) and testing (lab tests, CBC, glucose). The app will fully support standards-based data exchanges as well as interoperate with Intermountain’s order entry system.

Unlike other speech recognition applications like the Siri voice recognition software, M*Modal’s advanced cloud-based speech engine is uniquely customized for health care. M*Modal offers services based on the experience of recognizing and understanding the documentation of more than 200,000 doctors that rely on M*Modal’s cloud offerings every day.

“M*Modal and Intermountain are developing the industry’s first mobile order entry app to integrate speech understanding, giving physicians flexibility to make routine orders anytime and anywhere,” said Vern Davenport, CEO for M*Modal. “Our solution will integrate easily into a healthcare provider’s workflow, while capturing orders completely and accurately so physicians can focus on more critical needs at the point of care.”

M*Modal expects to release the order entry app in the fall of 2013 and will partner with other health systems to provide interoperability across multiple EHR systems and healthcare information management platforms.
