Most Physicians Won't Qualify For EHR ‘Meaningful Use'

Source: JACO Inc.

This article by JACO discusses the results of a recent government survey showing that two-thirds of office-based physicians plan to apply or have already applied for meaningful use (MU) incentives for using electronic health records (EHRs). However, the problem lies in the fact that only about a quarter have computer systems that support Stage 1 MU objectives, which are required to receive the incentives.

Meeting stage 1 meaningful use objectives can be difficult for office-based physicians, especially those operating an independent practice. Among the current and intended incentive applicants, only 27% had EHR systems that could support the core objectives outlined in Stage 1 meaningful use. The terms of meaningful use are set out in the provisions of the 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act that, “authorized incentive payments through Medicare and Medicaid to clinicians and hospitals that use electronic health records in a meaningful way that significantly improves clinical care.”

To read more about the difficulty physicians face when applying for Stage 1 MU incentives and more about the additional requirements that will be introduced in Stage 2, log in or register to read this article below.
