Provider Roadmap For ACOs

Providers represent the lynchpin of ACO success as directors of care coordination in the model. To achieve quality and savings goals, physicians must understand their evolving role within the functionality of the organization.

• ACO providers can choose to participate in a Medicare-­‐based shared savings-­‐only model with no financial risk for the first three years of participation
  • This represents the purest form of shared savings as a one-­‐sided risk model
  • These ACO participants have the potential to realize up to 50 percent of shared savings
• By participating in an ACO, physicians may have access to contracts with payers that might otherwise exclude them, and will also have the opportunity to participate in the development of protocols for their network providers and the governance of the ACO
• The program also includes provisions allowing physicians to participate in more than one Medicare ACO
