Sandlot Solutions CEO Joe Casper sat down with the Institute for Health Technology Transformation in October to discuss the power of data and the future of health information exchange (HIE). We’ve since learned that 78 percent of senior leaders, clinical leaders and operations leaders of hospitals, health systems and physician organizations named HIE as their single greatest strategic opportunity for 2013. As they say, time waits for no man, so we’ve already begun the second half of 2013 – and as HIEs continue to gain traction, it seemed fitting to revisit Joe’s insights. How have HIE solutions changed the face of the healthcare industry and the way data is exchanged?
At face value, health information exchanges are beginning to do something that hasn’t been possible in the past; they are able to break down the silos of information, presenting aggregated patient views with rich clinical content. These new health information exchanges are augmented by highly robust electronic data warehouses that have been tuned to leverage clinical and administrative (claims) content.
