Alpine Urology Uses EHR Solution To Be First Practice To Join Colorado HIE For Care Collaboration, Improved Outcomes

Source: Greenway Health

When Drs. Jim Clark, Sam Melouk, Cragin Anderson and John Kefer of Alpine Urology learned that the state of Colorado was forming the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (CORHIO), they knew their five-location practice, based in Boulder, had to be a part of it. They felt that CORHIO would be a critical element in improving healthcare quality for all Coloradans by cost-effective and secure data-sharing through a statewide health information exchange.

But they knew that also meant they needed a new electronic health record (EHR) system.

Alpine Urology had been an early adopter of basic electronic records. The staff entered patient data in separate practice management and charting systems that featured simple text-based documents and templates, along with scanning and faxing capabilities. It was a good entry into the world of electronic records, but the needs of the expanding practice — as well as industry requirements and available technologies — had evolved. While Alpine Urology had patients’ medical histories stored electronically, it had no database or ePrescribing capabilities, both critical to obtaining federal EHR meaningful use funds to support the practice’s ongoing care-coordination and collaboration initiatives, including participation in CORHIO.
