How Meaningful Use Perpetuates The EMR Communication Barrier

As we move towards interoperability, patient data is constantly changing hands, but proprietary EHR vendor codes inhibit the true exchange of patient information. Meaningful Use attempts to address this by forcing vendors to share data using common, standard terminologies (such as SNOMED-CT). However, the translation from the original data format into the standard terminology can lead to data distortion and/or loss of important clinical data – and that assumes the translation was done properly in the first place. For example, the data shows that three professional coders will agree on which SNOMED-CT term to use in a given situation just 33 percent of the time. This article will use specific examples to show how this scenario plays out in clinical settings and offer an alternative approach to achieve true interoperability. By Dr. Jon Handler, CMIO, M*Modal
