White paper: Fundamentals Of EMR Optimization, Risk Mitigation, And Information Availability
Automation is transforming the landscape of today's healthcare industry, replacing paper documents with digitized files. Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems within hospitals and Computerized Patient Records (CPR) systems within supporting practices and clinics hold the promise of improved quality of care, faster access to patient information, and reduced operational expenses for physicians and administrators.
Accelerating the adoption of these systems are Federal mandates and financial incentives. Under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 (ARRA) stimulus package, the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) provides incentives to physicians and healthcare organizations that adopt certified electronic health records. Along with this ‘carrot' comes the ‘stick' that reduces Medicare payments to those who do not digitize their records and/or implement an effective EMR system. To avoid lower payments, healthcare organizations must demonstrate "meaningful use" of an EMR system.
